Positive Connections is a collaborative effort between Nami of Greater Toledo and Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northwest Ohio. Positive Connections began in 1999 through a collaboration among Nami of Greater Toledo, Unison Behavioral Healthcare and Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northwest Ohio. The program initially began to address the unique needs children of mentally ill parents through education, support and mentoring. In 1988 the program was expanded to include children who, themselves, struggle with Emotional/mental/behavioral difficulties through the same components of Education, support and mentoring. The program was expanded to fill community need in helping children better understand and cope with their own difficulties along with those of their family.

“Positive Connections is truly an idea whose time has come. After reviewing the literature and contacting programs locally and nationally, we have not found a program as comprehensive and unique as Positive Connections,” says Leona Lewis, previous Positive Connections Coordinator. “It has the potential to become a model program for other communities.”
