hen a family
faces the difficult task of managing the mental illness of a parent, the children
often get lost in the shuffle. Now these children have a place of their own at
POSITIVE CONNECTIONS.
Attention is normally given to the parent to treat their mental illness, but no one
ever talks with the children in the family to help them to understand what is wrong
with their parent. This can lead to feelings of fear, anger, isolation and shame.
These children face other issues too. Most grieve the loss of not having
a "normal" family. Many are forced to care for their parent and take on other
adult responsibilities. And, some children even exhibit symptoms of mental illness
because they model their parents' behavior.
